"In those
days Marty traveled in two cars, or sometimes station wagons. He carried as
many as 10 people, with 5 in each car. I rode in the first car, along with
Marty, Jim Farmer (steel guitar player) Bobby Sykes, (rhythm guitar player and
front man who opened the shows), and Louie Dunn, (drums). Marty carried a
little ukulele, made by the Martin Guitar company, and would often pass the
hours and miles by singing every song he could think of, with Bobby and me
adding harmony. Many of the songs were Western songs, and it was during this
time that Marty decided to do an album of these songs-half of which would be
the old standards made famous by the Sons of the Pioneers and the Riders of the
Purple Sage-and the other half new songs. But it was Marty who wrote what I
believe is the greatest Western song of all time, “El Paso.” The song took him
several months to write, and each time we went out on tour, Marty would sing
the latest verses. I laid out the harmony and sang tenor and Bobby Sykes sang
the baritone part. By the time we accompanied Marty into the studio to record
the song, we had it down so well that it only took 4 takes to get the final
version, and 2 of those were false starts." Written by Jim Glaser
